I recently trained at several schools in Thailand to teach English, working outside Bangkok for a semester with a private middle school. I love the English language and hope my enthusiasm has a positive effect on my students. Following six months in Thailand with TEFL International and a private secondary school, I have returned to California in the US to tutor English and other general study subjects at the primary and secondary education level. I have previously taught adult literacy and ESL to Spanish speakers and low-income persons. I tutored immigrant Spanish speakers in-home for the organization Refugee Transitions in San Francisco; and tutored English while a student abroad in Brazil (1990.) I also entered with an organization, Rede Mulher (Women's Network), for two semesters to translate. Prior to travel in Thailand, I instructed blogging and MS Word applications for Internet and PC users. My background in education includes a B.A. degree from the University of Madison- Wisconsin in Comparative Literature and Spanish. I studied Portuguese for one year in Brazil where I also tutored ESL. In San Francisco, I tutored homeless students after school, taught adult literacy and ESL to Spanish speakers; and instructed for internet and PC users. I have produced several video presentations and a hands-on (internet accessible) e-book. My most recent training in Thailand stressed language immersion. I believe language proficiency in class can be reproduced both formally and informally in context; for instance, social settings and conversation practice (via internet or in-person) can function to improve learning skills.
